Fragrance products, (edt's perfumes and aftershaves) come in different strengths, and consist of a concentration of perfume (essential) oils in a solvent (normally alcohol).
The amount of perfume oil in a product dictates its strength, which affects how long the fragrance will last on your skin, and is also reflected in the price.
Below is a brief guide to the variants available.
FOR WOMEN ...
PERFUME (or parfum) is the strongest concentration. It typically provides up to 8 hours of fragrance on the skin. Perfume is the most expensive variant of the fragrance range.
EAU DE PERFUME (or eau de parfum, Edp) is the next strongest version. It is intended to give an enduring scent for a more reasonable price, and typically provides up to 7 hours of fragrance on the skin.
EAU DE TOILETTE (Edt) is a popular and affordable concentration, nearly always presented in a spray bottle, and typically providing up to 6 hours of fragrance on the skin.
EAU DE COLOGNE (Edc) is weaker that Edt and typically provides up to 3 hours of fragrance on the skin.
FOR MEN ...
EAU DE TOILETTE (Edt) is generally the strongest concentration available for men. It is presented in a spray bottle, and is intended for use on the body. Edt typically provides up to 6 hours of fragrance on the skin.
AFTERSHAVE is weaker than Edt so that it can be used on the face, typically providing up to 3 hours of fragrance on the skin. It is presented normally in a splash, but occasionally in a spray bottle.
AFTERSHAVE BALM is fragranced lotion or cream, of similar concentration to aftershave, intended for use on the face, to soothe, soften and fragrance your skin after shaving.
